Strengths
- 16-bit per-channel PWM gives fine grayscale control for smooth low-end dimming and gradients, well beyond the 8-bit resolution of many pixel chips.
- The two-wire clocked interface (separate data and clock) provides generous timing tolerance, easing reliable transfer over longer cascaded runs.
- Native RGBW support with a dedicated white channel plus a wide 5 to 24V supply range, suiting both bulb-style and higher-voltage installations.
Limitations
- As a clocked two-wire part the extra clock conductor adds wiring and cost and another point of failure, and a high-frequency clock line can radiate EMI in sensitive installations. Its timing-tolerance advantage is genuine but comes at that cost, and the market is trending toward data-only single-wire chips to avoid both, so clocked is a tradeoff rather than simply better.
- There is no redundant data line, so a single failed IC breaks the rest of the chain downstream. Its 2000Hz PWM is comfortably flicker-free for camera work up to 67fps, which covers typical use, but it is not an ultra-high-refresh part for demanding high-speed capture.
Overview
The MY9291 is a cascadable constant-current LED driver used in WiFi RGBW bulbs and pixel fixtures. It uses a two-wire clocked interface with separate data and clock lines rather than a self-clocking single-wire signal, which relaxes timing tolerance along a chain. Each device drives red, green, blue and white channels at 16-bit grayscale resolution and operates from 5 to 24V, in an SOP20 package. It suits work needing fine dimming and stable colour.
