WS2813 Pixel Protocol

Strengths
- Redundant data line: if a single LED fails, the backup signal path bridges the gap so the rest of the chain keeps running, a meaningful reliability gain over the WS2812 for long installed runs.
- Single-wire wiring keeps cabling and connectors minimal (data plus power only), with no separate clock conductor to route or terminate.
- Wide 5 to 12V operating range and integrated per-pixel IC in a standard SMD5050 package make it flexible across strip and module form factors; 8-bit-per-channel depth gives full 24-bit RGB colour.
Limitations
- As a data-only single-wire protocol, timing is critical: the fixed self-clocking bit-timing is sensitive to signal integrity, so long leader cables, poor grounding, or level-shifting issues can corrupt data. The backup line improves fault tolerance against dead pixels but does not relax the timing requirement.
- The 2000Hz PWM rate is comfortably flicker-free for general use and safe for the rated cameras up to 67fps, but it leaves limited headroom for very high-speed or slow-motion capture; confirm the refresh suits the camera work if the install is filmed.
- RGB only (no white channel), 8-bit per channel; where a dedicated white or higher bit depth is needed, this protocol will not provide it.
Overview
The WS2813 is Worldsemi's single-wire, self-clocking RGB pixel protocol, an evolution of the WS2812 with one standout addition: a redundant (backup) data line. Each SMD5050 package integrates its controller IC and drives 8 bits per channel (24-bit RGB) at a 2000Hz PWM rate, running at 5 to 12V. Data and its timing travel on one conductor, so cable runs stay simple, but the timing tolerance is tight. Its dual-signal design lets the chain skip a failed LED rather than going dark downstream.
